Shockwave Therapy

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy (SWT) is a non-invasive acoustic wave which carries high energy to painful spots in musculoskeletal tissues. The high energy helps promote regeneration and reparative processes of tendons, bones and other soft tissues. Compressed air creates kinetic energy in a projectile which in turn transmits it’s energy from the applicator to the target tissue.

By delivering a mechanical stress to injured tissues, Shock Waves can enable:

  • Immediate pain relief
  • A healing reaction of the body

The Swiss DolorClast Method® is the most well-researched shock wave therapy. A combination of unique technologies, clinically proven protocols and education ensure significant improvement in given musculoskeletal and dermatological indications.

How will I know if Shockwave Therapy is right for me?

Your chiropractor will go through a full medical history and physical examination before recommending Shockwave Therapy as a treatment option for you. Depending on the type of condition that you are presenting with, your chiropractor may also recommend that you have a diagnostic ultrasound examination to help with a more accurate diagnosis before deciding on SWT.

What types of problems can Shockwave Therapy help with?

These are some of the most common types that we see:

  • Shoulder tendinopathies and impingement syndromes
  • Elbow: Tennis and Golfer’s
  • Patellar tendinopathy
  • Hip bursitis
  • Achilles tendinopathies
  • Plantar fasciopathy (heel pain)

How many sessions of Shockwave Therapy will I need?

SWT has been found to bring relief in most patients after just a few treatment sessions, even in patients suffering from chronic pain. Generally, we would anticipate some relief of your symptoms after 3-5 sessions. It is vitally important that you follow your chiropractor’s recommendations in reference to precautions and exercises that you will need to do in between sessions to aid in your recovery and response to treatment.

How often will I need to attend for my shockwave treatment and how long do they last?

Normally, the sessions are spaced at one week intervals. There is some flexibility in the frequency but it depends on how you are responding to each session. We normally allow about 15 minutes per session, however, the actual application of the shockwave is not normally much longer than about 5 minutes.

Is Shockwave Therapy painful?

There may be a slight feeling of discomfort during the treatment, depending on the level of pain you are already experiencing in the area. However, since the treatment lasts only about five minutes, most people can tolerate this discomfort.

Is there any proof that your shockwave device works?

Yes, being clinically proven is one of the pillars of the Swiss DolorClast method. Many randomised controlled trials (RCTs) demonstrating efficacy and safety of the Swiss DolorClast method on different indications have been published in the international peer-review literature. So far, 26 RCTs have been published on the Swiss DolorClast method, 15 of which have been listed in the PEDro database.
