About Chiropractic
What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a science, art and philosophy which is concerned with the relationship between the nervous system and normal bodily functions i.e. health. Chiropractic is the most practised complementary therapy in the West with thousands of practitioners worldwide.
Chiropractic Philosophy
Chiropractors consider the spine as the most important structure in the body and stress its role in protecting the nervous system. Chiropractors believe that spinal misalignment not only results in back pain but affects the entire body. Treatment focuses on joint manipulation/mobilisation which is commonly referred to within the profession as an “adjustment”.
What does a Chiropractor do?
Chiropractors are highly trained and qualified specialists in the diagnosis, treatment and management of musculoskeletal disorders. The treatment is by specific manual therapy. This means that Chiropractors do not use any form of drugs or surgery to carry out their work. Where necessary, Chiropractors may take x-rays or use diagnostic ultrasound to help them in making a more accurate diagnosis prior to starting treatment.
Whom and what do Chiropractors treat?
Simply, Chiropractors treat everyone. There is no age limit, whether young or old, the human spine always needs care and attention just as our eyes and teeth do, perhaps more so since we can’t replace our spine! The spine has many moving parts and moving parts can be prone to problems.
The types of problems most commonly seen by Chiropractors are back pain, neck pain, cervicogenic headaches (neck related), shoulder and arm pain, leg pain, hip pain, trapped nerves and numerous other conditions such as those associated with minor sporting injuries.
It is important to note, however, that the above presentations are what chiropractors, as primary care practitioners, are often presented within the course of their work. Chiropractors do not claim to be able to always successfully treat or cure such complaints. Chiropractic often works best when used as a “package” of care. For this reason, our practice has a good referral network with other health-care professionals such as neurosurgeons and orthopaedic consultants for onward referral purposes where deemed necessary.
